The maternity benefit can only come into effect if the optional benefit is effective on the policy 30 days prior to conception. If you were pregnant, no medically underwritten plan would be able to offer you coverage since the pregnancy would be considered a declinable pre-existing condition. If you had insurance and then got pregnant before the maternity optional benefit was effective then the routine maternity care would not be covered, but any complications (God forbid) would be covered as a medical benefit under the terms outlined in your regular medical policy.
