Health Reform Galaxy Blog: Pushing ahead with malpractice reform - with or without Congress

Philip K. Howard, founder and chairman of Common Good, writes about establishing special health courts as a way to reform the medical liability system.

Health care reform gives the sense of a ship tossed about in stormy seas, with political decisions to steer here or there in reaction to the uncertain winds of public opinion and a gale of special interests. The fact of a partisan mutiny makes the destination very uncertain. Will reform capsize altogether, will it wash us onto the shoals of unaffordability, or will it lead us towards a new social contract?

The area in which I’ve been most involved is trying to improve our system of medical justice. The basic goal is to create a reliable system of justice that will provide the transparency and openness needed to improve patient safety, the trust in justice needed to reduce defensive medicine, and a reduction in adversarial process needed for quick and fair compensation for injured patients.

It’s hard to find anyone in health care who doesn’t support some version of this change—patient safety experts, consumer groups, providers, as well as editorial boards and the public at large, all overwhelmingly support trying to create a reliable foundation of justice. (See here, here, and here.)

Health Insurance Clauses, Limitations, and Exclusions Broken Down

Ok so I wanted to write a page about the exclusions and limitations in a health insurance policy. So in a totally new, never before done article I wanted to illustrate some of these exclusions and discuss them line by line. I chose Cigna because it was the first one that I picked randomly, and I am certainly not picking on Cigna as everyone else’s plans are virtually identical, and literally filled with the same exclusions and limitations. It is more an attack on the health insurance industry and I am not vindictive at all towards Cigna.

In any event lets look at some of these plan exclusions and discuss them. Feel free to email us and give us some suggestions and share your experiences with these individual or even group health insurance exclusions.

Individual and Family Plans EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS Conditions which are pre-existing as defined in the Definitions section.—This is pretty obvious, if you have an existing condition, the health insurance companies simply won’t cover it for as long as they can get away with it, and if it is a chronic condition you will most likely be declined for coverage all together. Most states only allow for a one year preexisting condition. But in many cases and states the health insurance companies will end up excluding the condition entirely which is called ridering a condition. I find this entire situation gross and unfair toward a segment of the population that needs assistance the most.

Diary of a Health Insurance Agent in Training

Since no one is probably reading this yet, I figure I am going to direct these entries to a new agent like myself. I decided to hop on the phones today. I can prepare myself as much as I can with carrier and plan knowledge, but without knowing a person’s needs I have no idea

Why Obama Is (Finally) Taking on Wall Street

Its never too late to fix this mess, and populism is a good term for this particular desire of America to see the bankers get their due. It still however is bewildering that over a year has gone by and no real attempt at legislation has hit anyone's desk. Is this not corruption? But what is more angering about this corruption is that it is so blatant, that no one seems to care about it. I hope now that this issue will not turn out like the health reform debacle, which can be seen here http://echealthinsurance.com/blog/

Day 2 | Diary of a Health Insurance Agent in Training

After walking into the online store of www.echealthinsurance.com and finding the people that run this place, I am glad to see the people that work here actually care about the consumers and are helping the uninformed to find the best possible solution (insurance) to their problems. I was a little overwhelmed as I walked into a place that seemed to be growing out of their office. Literally, people are fighting for desks if someone is out sick, but everyone seemed to be a happy family.

My first day, I got to sit in on a face-to-face sales call and watch someone save over $300 a month and receive a better policy! I just tried to sit back and watch, but my natural sales mentality made me jump in and start asking questions about the lady’s policy and why she wanted to change. Basically, she was paying too much, and wanted to see if there were better options out there. Of course, there were and Caroline ended selling the policy, but it did not really seem like she was selling her at all. That is what is great about what I witnessed. Being able to listen to a knowledgeable health insurance agent find out why someone is looking for new coverage, and just giving the consumer all the options she has is like going to a 5 star restaurant with a menu in a different language. You know everything on the menu is going to be great, but you have no idea what is going on until the waiter starts explaining the menu for you. Each product has its ups and downs, you may pay more for the 10 course meal, but at least you finally get an understanding of what you are about to receive.

I say this for the fact that even after getting licensed I have no idea how to sell health insurance, let alone buy it. So after asking 100 plus questions today, I came to the realization that I need to do my homework. The great peice of information and the reason I chose to work here versus a call center is that the agents I am working around aren’t pushing the fish that is going bad because they need to make money off of it (sorry for the bad analogies, I am new to blogging and was also in the restaurant industry for quite sometime), but because they want their potential clients to receive the best policy no matter which carrier pays the most or least. Well that’s it for my first real day… I already feel like I have cameras on me and I am fist pumping at the Jersey Shore…

Day 3- a glance into the world of selling | Diary of a Health Insurance Agent in Training

Since no one is probably reading this yet, I figure I am going to direct these entries to a new agent like myself. I decided to hop on the phones today. I can prepare myself as much as I can with carrier and plan knowledge, but without knowing a person’s needs I have no idea what is going to be on the test to study for. Basically, I use my sound sales skilled learned in the past and use them in every call.

Step 1: Start off with a blank slate. Do not just send quotes. If they are going to buy health insurance from seeing quotes, then they would have already. I want to speak to the person seeking information on insurance and find the right plan based on their needs. Even if I do not know all the answers, I want to let them know I am going spend the time to find out those answers. If it matters to them, it matters to me.

Stupid Frogs

Definition of a Stupid Frog:

It is common knowledge that a frog will not allow itself to be boiled intentionally. If you throw a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will jump out. On the other hand, if you throw a frog into a pot of cold water, then slowly turn up the heat, it will boil and die! A stupid frog is one that allows itself to slowly boil or in the case of Americans losing their freedoms, slowly become a subject of the ever increasing power of the government.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

Jacksonville Duval County Health Insurance Quotes | Jacksonville Health Quotes | Florida Health Insurance

In Jacksonville, Florida there is the usual five companies including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, and United Health One. By 2010 if the economy is still intact and health reform has not significantly changed the landscape you might expect to see more health insurance companies available in the Jacksonville and Duval County health insurance market. In South Florida home of East Coast Health Insurance there is in fact 8 respected health insurance companies and it is not unlikely that Coventry, Avmed, and Vista might release their plans state-wide.

Additionally Jacksonville, interestingly enough is home to Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield two of the states largest employers and it is not difficult to believe that these companies employ a significant percentage of Jacksonville residents and hopefully add value to the community.

But the truth is in the Jacksonville health insurance market that prices can vary significantly as you can see from the sample quote I ran for my wife and I. Remember that these rates are as of November 2009 and might change or have already changed. Of course no one has ever seen a health insurance price decrease so it is unlikely to see too much change in the model below, but on the other hand your age can play a significant role as can your gender in these rates. Using the arbitrary zip code of 32210 it is quite evident that the United Health One plan is priced the best and is certainly very attractive for Jacksonville residents that have a similar demographic representation.

Nevada Health Insurance | Nevada Health Insurance Quotes | Nevada Health Quotes

East Coast Health Insurance has moved into the Nevada health insurance market and we are betting that we are going to love it! All very bad jokes aside health insurance in Nevada is of course a little different then the normal Humana, United, and Blue Cross Blue Shield that we usually peddle. Of course Nevada offers those great companies as well, but they also have an interesting company called Sierra Health and Life and some great unique Coventry health insurance plans as well.

Blue Cross Imagines Health Reform | Health Insurance News, Views, and Reviews

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida has come forward with their vision of health reform, and no you crazy kids it doesn’t involve corporate malfeasance or shooting everyone that doesn’t buy a Blue Cross policy, but it does involve of course increasing profits.

The following post is from an email we received outlining the Blue Cross Blue Shield vision of health reform in Florida and nationwide. If you have the attention span to sit through it, I applaud you.

Aetna Underwriting Update for Individual Policies | Health Insurance News, Views, and Reviews

Due to the fact that we are more then just a source for the latest health reform updates, I wanted to break from the daily grind of writing about the Washington Health Insurance Reform Debate and instead write a quick post about Aetna’s new health insurance underwriting criteria for individual insurance as it pertains to doctor’s visits to complete undewriting.

For more on health insurance underwriting please visit our main health insurance section.

The following is from a broker update emailed to our office to help expedite the underwriting process. It pertains to the fact that Aetna requires some kind of health history when submitting an application. Specifically, Aetna requires that individuals that haven’t seen a doctor for a few years must then go and get a physical.

Hawaii Health Insurance

You lucky dogs in Hawaii (unless you are a small business owner I suppose)! You are the only state that requires employer to offer health insurance coverage to employees. Mississippi Health Insurance | Mississippi Individual Health Insurance Quote

The Mississippi Health Insurance market is fairly simple to tread through for shoppers due to the fact that there are not that many companies in the state of Mississippi to choose from. Currently, there are only four East Coast Health Insurance approved companies in the entire state. If your current health insurance company is not listed here, you should certainly begin comparing other companies right now as we have done impeccable research and our findings conclude that unless you have either Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, United Health One, or Humana chances are you are either overpaying or risking your health by going with an untrusted name.

Florida Maternity Options - Florida Health Insurance Option | Florida Health Insurance

Individual health insurance policies in the Florida health insurance market do not automatically include maternity benefits, but rather only cover any complications due to pregnancy. In order to receive any coverage for routine maternity benefits you would need to enroll in a medical plan that offered maternity coverage as an optional benefit since Aetna does not offer maternity benefits.

Health Reform Legislation Being Threatened | Health Insurance News, Views, and Reviews

The Republican Attorney Generals are threatening to make the health reform bill more difficult, though many in Washington are unsure of how that could even be possible at this point. According to the Associated Press, the Republican Attorney General’s from various states, are in a huff due to the extortion carried out by Nebraska’s Senator Nelson. At least 13 states are insisting that Congressional Leaders remove the unfair Medicaid referendum being promised to Nebraska in return for their support of the Senate Health Reform Bill.

The letter of distraught starts out with, “we believe this provision is constitutionally flawed,” which was written last Wednesday (I was busy working on our health insurance site so I apologize for the tardiness of this post).
